Getting clients is the number one challenge cited by many (especially new) independent consultants in the international development and social impact space. You might be good at your craft but inexperienced in the "business end" of running a consulting business, which is, as the name suggests, a business! 

Fortunately, there are strategies for getting clients that work.  

Now, like many things in life, there are both short and long answers to the question, "How do I get more clients?".

 

The longer, more effective, more sustainable and, ultimately, most time-efficient approaches revolve around how to position yourself as an expert in your field. People will want to work with you if they know, like and trust you. You'll need to grow an audience and demonstrate your expertise to them. 

As you position yourself as an expert in your field, you'll find that the "short answers" to the above question (identifying publicly-listed opportunities, getting people to refer you, etc.) start becoming a lot more achievable.
