[SKILLS EXCHANGE /18 Aug] How to define your consulting "specialism"

Announcing the next IC-Hub Skills Exchange live meet-up event! It's on Wednesday, 18 August at 5pm (London) // 6pm (Geneva) // 11pm (Bangkok). It's for IC-Hubbers, but non-members are welcome to join us via the form below to access the link on the new members' welcome page.

IC-Hub Skills Exchanges encourage the exchange of independent consulting skills, with a facilitator who shares their experience, asks questions, and moderates the discussion.

This Skills Exchange is led by Magdalena Mactas, an independent Audiovisual and Digital Communications Specialist at her own MAG Agency, specialised in working with social impact organisations like United Nations agencies and the European Commission.

What will we discuss at the Skills Exchange?

As we’ve said many times here at the IC-Hub, one consulting key to success is the ability to communicate clearly what you do and whom you do it for. But how do you decide what to specialise in if you have worked as a generalist or if you have multiple passions, interests and expertise?

Magdalena will lead a discussion about how independent social impact professionals like us can use “Design Thinking” to define our consulting “specialisms”. In particular, we’ll touch on:

  • What “Design Thinking” is;

  • How to apply Design Thinking to yourself as a consulting business and clarify your positioning.

Who should attend?

  • Anyone wishing to learn the basics of Design Thinking, either working within a team of consultants or as an independent consultant.

  • Anyone keen to learn about innovation and who values methods for generating ideas through empathy and prototyping.

  • Anyone who wants to explore tools for developing their business (either independents or not).

No previous knowledge of Design Thinking is required and it should be useful for consultants with a variety of backgrounds.

The presentation will give an initial idea about Design Thinking and how it can be applied to oneself as a solopreneur consulting business.
